Get to know Mark Bidwell


Q: What was your first job?

A: I had lots of different jobs when I was at school / University (paperboy, barman, warehouse worker, retail and factory jobs) but my first real job after University was a bookmaker at William Hill.

Q: What were your earliest ambitions?

A: To be a professional sportsman. I wasn’t fussed what sport. I was on the books at Mansfield Town FC until I was 14, then I quit to be a high jumper after making the England junior athletics team. Unfortunately, injuries forced an early retirement from athletics.

Q: How did you get to where you are today?

A: Ha, I haven’t gone far. I can almost see the house I grew up in from my office window. A mix of hard work and luck!

Q: What are the most important lessons you’ve learned along the way?

A: Say yes to every opportunity that comes your way. I remember, early on in my career, agreeing to take on tasks and responsibilities that terrified me because I knew that they would be good for me in the long run.

Q: Who- or what- were your major influences?

A: My parents. Both my parents were hard workers, however, they also have a relaxed attitude to life. Anyone who knows me will know that I have inherited that trait.

QWhat qualities do you need to succeed?

A: Perseverance and patience. If you want something you have to be persistent, but great things don’t happen overnight. If you keep doing the correct things over a sustained period of time, you will get rewarded for your efforts.

Q: Was there a defining moment in your career?

A: Qualifying as a Costs Lawyer. Balancing study and a full time job was hard work, however it was worth the effort.

Q: What’s the secret of your success?

A: I don’t think there is any secret to success. I am good at spotting opportunities and happy to take calculated risks. If you surround yourself with ambitious people, they will push you to achieve.

Q: If you were starting again, what would you do differently?

A: I would delegate earlier. Nobody can be an expert in everything and when starting a new business the temptation is to do everything yourself. Find good people to do the things they are good at, freeing you up to do the things you do best.

Q: What do you do to relax?

A: I like watching movies, playing football and I am a casual a gamer in my spare time.

Q: Who do you most admire in today’s business world and why?

A: Elon Musk. He has an incredible drive, intellect and vision.

Q: What qualities do you admire in people?

A: Integrity, honesty and drive.

Q: What do you most dislike?

A: Idleness, selfishness and arrogance.

Q: What would be your one piece of advice to aspiring business people?

A: Set goals and push yourself to achieve them. Once you have achieved your goals, set some more!
